A little whiles ago, crosswalk lights used to just have just two things on them: green walking dude and red hand.
The sequence was green walking dude (go ahead and walk), flashing red hand (hurry up and finish) and solid red hand (you walk, you die).
Then, there was a change.
Suddenly you’d see a timer counting down next to the red hand. Nowadays they’re everywhere.
The timer gets attention, it lets people know they’ve got a finite and rapidly decreasing amount of time to cross.
It motivates people.
